Forest Footsteps

Destination Details

Forest Footsteps is a 14-day immersive journey through the wild heart of South India, connecting the misty Western Ghats to the ancient ridges of the Eastern Ghats. Beginning in Bangalore and ending in Chennai, this route explores a rare blend of tropical rainforests, highland treks, tribal cultures, and birding havens. Trek through Coorg’s coffee hills, hike to the sacred Iruppu Falls, safari through Nagarhole and Tholpetty, and witness untouched biodiversity in Silent Valley National Park. Walk with tribal guides, canoe through quiet jungle rivers in Thattekad, and end with a visit to Vedanthangal, India’s oldest bird sanctuary. This experience is perfect for nature lovers, wildlife explorers, and slow travelers seeking offbeat trails, deep forests, and authentic ecological connection across three vibrant South Indian states.

Itinerary

Touch down in Bangalore, where you’ll meet your group and guide. Settle in and get briefed on the journey ahead. Stretch your legs with a relaxed nature walk in one of the city’s green lungs—an ideal introduction to the forests that await.

Leave the city behind and head toward the misty hills of Coorg. Known for its aromatic coffee estates and cool forest trails, Coorg offers a gentle first taste of the Western Ghats. Enjoy a short sunset walk through plantation paths surrounded by birdsong and breeze.

Start your day with the Nishani Motte trek, weaving through the Brahmagiri Range. Traverse mist-laced ridges and deep green canopies, keeping an eye out for langurs, hornbills, and wild boars along the way. The trail offers both adventure and serenity.

Today, explore Nagarhole National Park, one of India’s richest wildlife reserves. An early morning jeep safari gives you the chance to spot tigers, elephants, leopards, and dholes. Later, unwind with a peaceful riverbank walk through the buffer zone, perfect for birdwatching.

Trek through dense forests and tribal hamlets to reach the enchanting Iruppu Falls, believed to have mythological origins. Listen to stories of local legends while soaking in the power of the waterfall and the forest that surrounds it.

Cross the state border into Wayanad, a green paradise known for its rolling hills and hidden streams. Visit Pookode Lake, then take a twilight walk near Lakkidi Viewpoint, one of the highest spots in the region, offering breathtaking views and moody sunsets.

Hike to the Edakkal Caves, famous for their ancient petroglyphs etched into stone walls. In the afternoon, visit a nearby tribal village to experience traditional lifestyles, local crafts, and meaningful cultural exchange.

Venture deeper into Tholpetty, home to wild elephants, gaur, and even leopards. Start with a morning trek through the sanctuary’s forest trails, then continue on a guided jeep safari inside this rich biodiversity zone. The region offers excellent chances for wildlife photography.

Travel south to Silent Valley National Park, one of the most pristine and untouched forests in India. Settle near the park edge and immerse yourself in nature’s sounds—chirping cicadas, rustling leaves, and distant animal calls under a sky full of stars.

Embark on a guided trek into Silent Valley’s buffer zones, home to rare and endemic species like the lion-tailed macaque, Malabar giant squirrel, and medicinal flora. This is a haven for birdwatchers and plant enthusiasts alike, with dense canopies and magical silence.

Head east to Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, Kerala’s premier birding hotspot. Explore the forest trails with expert local guides and listen for the haunting calls of night birds like Ceylon Frogmouth and Bay Owl as evening falls.

Spend a full day spotting exotic birds such as Malabar Trogon, White-bellied Treepie, and Great Hornbills. In the afternoon, take a silent canoe ride along the river, gliding past overhanging trees and listening to the jungle chorus from the water.

Begin your journey toward Vellore, a lesser-known entry point to the Eastern Ghats. Explore the nearby Yelagiri Hills or take short hikes through scrub forests and dry deciduous terrain, offering a stark contrast to the rainforests you just left behind.

En route to Chennai, stop at the Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary, one of India’s oldest protected wetlands. Watch painted storks, egrets, and ibises nesting in seasonal abundance. By evening, reach Chennai, where you’ll wrap up with a peaceful sunset walk along the Coromandel Coast.
