Deccan Drift

Destination Details

Deccan Drift is a thrilling 11-day birding and biodiversity journey through the heart of the Western Ghats, from Bangalore to Kochi. Explore a rich tapestry of ecosystems—from the dry forests of Mudumalai to the cool highlands of Ooty and Munnar, and into the dense rainforests of Periyar and Thattekad. Spot iconic endemics like the Nilgiri Blue Robin, Malabar Trogon, and White-bellied Treepie, alongside elephants, gaurs, and exotic butterflies. Guided by expert naturalists, this trail is perfect for bird lovers, photographers, and nature travelers seeking an offbeat, immersive experience in South India’s wildest corners.

Itinerary

Welcome to the Garden City! Upon arrival at Bangalore International Airport, begin your journey south into the bio-rich belt of the Deccan Plateau. Transfer to the edges of Mudumalai National Park, where dry deciduous forests and thorny scrublands set the tone for your first birding sessions. Check in to your forest lodge, breathe in the wild, and prepare for the avian wonders ahead.

Spend your day immersed in the unique terrain of Mudumalai, tracking down key species like the Malabar Lark, White-bellied Minivet, Painted Spurfowl, and the elusive Grey-headed Bulbul. The park also hosts Malabar Woodshrikes, jungle owlets, and early morning peacock displays. Sunset birding by forest edges brings a peaceful close to the day.

Delve deeper into Mudumalai’s hidden birding zones. Early morning drives or trails may offer glimpses of raptors, shrikes, and warblers. The day is tailored for focused target species and photographic opportunities. In the evening, enjoy field discussions and checklist sessions with your naturalist guide.

Ascend into the Nilgiri Hills, a cool contrast to the dry plains. Settle in Ooty, a colonial-era hill town nestled in the shola-grassland mosaic. Begin searching for iconic high-elevation endemics like the Nilgiri Flycatcher, Nilgiri Laughingthrush, Nilgiri Blue Robin, and the prized Nilgiri Thrush. Expect cooler temperatures and the charm of montane birding.

Today is dedicated to high-altitude specialties. Explore forest patches, valley trails, and ridge zones in pursuit of Kashmir Flycatchers, Blue-capped Rock-thrush, and shy ground dwellers like the Rusty-tailed Flycatcher. Enjoy the misty ambiance and rich acoustics of the shola forests as you scan for hidden gems among the ferns and moss.

Cross into Kerala and arrive in the misty hills of Munnar, nestled in the Cardamom Hills. As you settle in, start exploring the gullies and tea garden edges where the Black-and-Orange Flycatcher, Nilgiri Pipit, and Broad-tailed Grassbird thrive. Munnar’s mix of open slopes and forest thickets is a birder’s playground.

Explore the rolling grasslands and fragmented shola groves at higher elevations. Watch for flocks of Indian Rufous Babblers, listen for the calls of Malabar Whistling-thrush, and try your luck spotting the secretive Painted Bush-quail. If lucky, you might also catch sight of the endangered Nilgiri Tahr, grazing on rocky cliffs.

On your way to Periyar, stop near Bodinayakanur to search for the rare Yellow-throated Bulbul. At Periyar National Park, dive into evergreen forest birding in search of Wynaad Laughingthrush, Pied Thrush, and the vibrant Malabar Trogon. Watch for mammals like Asian Elephants, Gaur, Dholes, and the giant squirrel on jungle walks or boat rides.

Start early for deep forest trails and lakeside watch towers. The mix of bamboo groves, wet deciduous forests, and montane patches reveals diverse habitats. This is a great day for both forest canopy birding and terrestrial species, including warblers, woodpeckers, and possible hornbill sightings.

Your journey continues to Thattekad, Kerala’s most famous lowland rainforest and a birder’s paradise. Expect an explosion of color and sound—Malabar Grey Hornbill, White-bellied Treepie, Indian Pitta, and the mystical Ceylon Frogmouth await. Night walks may offer glimpses of Bay Owl, nightjars, and scops owls in torchlight.

On your final day, rise early for a bonus birding session or a quiet walk before breakfast. Then transfer to Kochi International Airport, carrying home field notes full of sightings, photographs, and lifers from one of India’s richest biodiversity corridors.
